Eligibility Criteria

  • Be at least 18 years old on February 1st of the year in which the Australia Awards Scholarships begins.
  • Be a citizen of one of the participating countries (as specified on the Australia Awards website), and reside in and apply for the scholarship from their home country.
  • You must not be an Australian citizen, have permanent residency in Australia, or be applying for a visa to live permanently in Australia.
  • At any moment throughout the application, selection, or mobilisation phases, you must not be married to, engaged to, or a de facto of someone who holds, or is eligible to hold, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency.
  • Not be a member of the military who is currently serving.
  • They must not have previously received a long-term Australia Award and must have lived outside of Australia for at least twice as long as they lived in Australia (for example, a previous awardee who has been on an Australia Awards Scholarship in Australia for four years will not be eligible to apply for another Australia Awards Scholarship until they have resided outside Australia for eight years).
  • Have met any additional requirements imposed by the Program Area or the government of the applicant’s home country (e.g. having worked a certain number of years in an appropriate sector).
  • Be able to meet the admission standards of the university where the award will be completed (this may compel Program Areas to withdraw an award offer if the recipient does not meet the institution’s admission requirements). It’s possible that this won’t be known until Program Areas request placement at certain universities).
  • To hold a Student Visa, you must be able to meet all of the Department of Home Affairs’ requirements. If the grantee cannot meet the visa criteria, the Program Area may be forced to withdraw an award offer.
  • They should not apply for a scholarship for a course of study at a lower academic level than they already have (e.g., a Master’s scholarship when they already have a Ph.D.).
  • Applicants must notify the Program Area of any connection or relationship with Program Area staff (including locally engaged staff at the post) or managing contractors in order for the application to be managed correctly and openly.
